The Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal met the protesting guest teachers at Jantar Mantar and expressed solidarity with their demands. Kejriwal addressed the teachers present there and also answered their questions.

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal advised protesting teachers, who are sitting on an indefinite hunger strike, to call off the strike. He claimed that hunger strikes did not help him and that is why I finally entered politics.

Arvind Kejriwal said: “The current administration should not have tampered with the February 6order issued by the Aaam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, which clearly stated that services of those employed as guest teachers will not be disturbed till these posts will be filled up on a permanent basis. The Delhi administration has discontinued the services of guest teachers since the month of May, without filling up these posts on a permanent basis, for which these teachers were to be considered and given weight age.”

A group of teachers from the All Guest Teachers Association who get paid on daily basis for teaching in different government schools, have been sitting on a dharna for around three weeks.

They have been demanding the renewal of services of around 10,200 teachers, demanding an increase in the age limit for them to be eligible for selection under the scheme. They are also demanding a permanent salary to be fixed for the group.

Kejriwal reminded the protesting teachers about the AAP government’s decision to set-up a time bound committee to look into the issue of regularizing all those employed on a non-permanent basis by the Sheila Diskhit government over the years, which was the root cause of the problem.

He said following the exit of the AAP government on February 14, the Delhi administration using the excuse of imposition of President’s rule, has been systematically overturning the pro-people decisions of his government to deliberately trouble the people.
