Aam Admi Party (AAP) removed Surendra Sharma of an East Delhi constituency for the Delhi Assembly Elections after the revelation of criminal cases against him. Balbir Singh, an RTI activist, will be the new candidate for the East Delhi constituency.

Surendra Sharma was selected to contest from Shahdara assembly constituency, but the AAP learnt that Mr. Sharma had a large number of criminal cases and property disputes. He was recently appointed chairperson of the election committee of the Shahdara Bar Association. The party learnt that this election was cancelled due to the alleged use of unfair means and violence.

AAP party said that they were not aware about the criminal cases and FIRs pending against Surendra Sharma as he did not mentioned on the form, which has to be filled before being selected as party’s candidate.

AAP statement said, “This action is in line with AAP’s commitment to ensure that no person with doubtful credentials represents the party in the upcoming elections”. Arvind Kejriwal said: “Even if on the last day of the nomination we receive any credible information against any candidate with regard to a criminal record, we will cancel the candidature and keep the seat vacant.”
