The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) be constituted to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal have also backed Arvind Kejriwal’s demand.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today met Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and demanded for an SIT probe in the Sikh riots of 1984. The LG has ensured that Arvind Kejriwal request would be seriously considered and the prime minister will be informed.

“I met with the Lieutenant Governor to form SIT to probe into the 1984 anti-sikh riots, and he is very positive on the issue. We will discuss the special investigation team formation and its terms in the next cabinet meeting,” Arvind Kejriwal said.

Arvind Kejriwal has accepted two of the demands put forward by the Sikh group, including the release of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar and the formation of SIT. Arvind Kejriwal has written to the President Pranab Mukherjee seeking clemency for Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar who is on death row for the September 1993 bomb blast that killed nine people.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party government ordered audit of the financial accounts of the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS). DIMTS has the task of operating infrastructure projects, including the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, construction of ISBT, and construction of bus depots.
